Dental Implants

Are you tired of living with missing teeth? It can take a real toll, whether it’s struggling to find foods to chew comfortably or covering that noticeable gap every time you smile. At Smilehaus Newmarket, we offer dental implants to help you overcome these challenges and smile confidently again.

How Does a Dental Implant Work?

A tooth implant comprises three pieces:

  1. Implant Post — The implant itself, surgically placed in the jawbone to replace the lost tooth root.
  2. Abutment — A small connector piece secures the replacement tooth to the implant once the post has fully integrated with the bone.
  3. Restoration — The replacement tooth or teeth that restores function and completes your smile. For a single tooth, it would be a crown; for multiple teeth, it would be an implant bridge or denture.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

There are several reasons why millions of people have chosen dental implants since they were first introduced over 40 years ago.
Improves Jawbone Health
After tooth loss, the supporting bone begins to shrink due to the lack of stimulation from the tooth. An implant mimics the natural action of the tooth root, continuing to stimulate the jawbone and preventing the bone loss that leads to a sunken facial appearance.
Looks and Functions Like a Natural Tooth
Unlike a denture or bridge that sits on top of the gums, an implant tooth secured in bone is incredibly stable. You can chew on it comfortably again, and because we craft each restoration to match your smile, no one will know it’s not your natural tooth.
Long-Lasting Tooth Replacement
Because a dental implant is embedded in bone, it becomes a permanent part of your dental anatomy as it heals. An implant can last 25 years or even a lifetime with proper care. Compare this to bridges or dentures that will need periodic replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental implant surgery should not hurt during the procedure. We thoroughly numb the treatment area with local anesthetic before beginning, so you'll feel pressure and sensations of movement, but not pain. Most patients are surprised by how much more comfortable the procedure is compared to what they expected.

Comfort During Implant Surgery

Under local anesthetic, the surgical site is completely numb. You'll be aware of what's happening due to pressure, vibrations, and the sensation of the dentist working, but these sensations shouldn't be painful.

For anxious patients or more complex cases involving multiple implants, we also offer IV sedation. With IV sedation, you'll be deeply relaxed or lightly sleeping throughout the procedure with little to no memory of it afterward.

What's Implant Surgery Recovery Like?

Once the anesthetic wears off (typically 2 to 4 hours after your appointment), you'll likely experience some soreness and swelling around the implant site. Most patients describe this discomfort as less painful than a tooth extraction and easily manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen.

Managing Your Comfort

If you're particularly anxious about pain, let us know during your consultation. We can discuss sedation options and create a pain management plan that keeps you comfortable throughout the entire process.

What to Expect with Dental Implants

  1. Initial Consultation and Evaluation — Our dentists perform a complete evaluation, including a conversation about your goals and desires. We review your medical and dental history and take digital x-rays and 3-D scans to see if you’re a good candidate. If you don’t have sufficient bone, we also offer bone grafting to make implant placement possible in the future.
  2. Cost and Insurance Conversation — Our team will explain cost and financing options with you. In some cases, dental insurance may cover a portion of your procedure.
  3. Implant Placement Surgery — We perform implant surgery here at our Newmarket dental office, precisely placing the titanium post under local anesthesia for a pain-free procedure.
  4. Implant Healing — The next step is the healing period, during which the titanium implant post fuses with your jawbone. This process is called osseointegration and takes 3–6 months to complete.
  5. Abutment and Restoration — Once the post fully integrates, we place the abutment on it and attach your custom-crafted restoration.

How Should I Care for My Implant

A commitment to conscientious brushing, flossing, and routine dental cleanings is essential for implant success. The primary cause of implant failure is peri-implantitis, often caused by poor oral hygiene. This condition occurs when bacteria from plaque buildup around the implant cause infection and inflammation in the gum and bone, threatening its stability.

Dental Implants Technology

CBCT Cone Beam Technology

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) creates detailed 3-D images of your teeth, jaw, sinuses, and surrounding bone structures. This advanced imaging technology allows us to plan dental implant placement with precision, evaluate impacted wisdom teeth, diagnose TMJ issues, and assess complex root canal cases. CBCT provides information that traditional x-rays can't capture, helping us develop more accurate treatment plans.
