Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

We always welcome your questions. Dentistry can sometimes seem confusing, but we're here to make it all clear so you can feel confident about trusting us with your dental care. On this page, you'll find some of the common questions we hear from our patients. If you don't find what you need here, please call Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999, and we'll be happy to help you.

CDCP Benefits

Yes. Your Canadian Dental Care Plan benefits should be renewed each year to ensure you remain eligible. June 1st is the deadline for renewing CDCP benefits in Newmarket.

Your coverage ended on June 30th if you didn't renew; however, you can submit a new application. There will be coverage gaps that you will be responsible for until it is reinstated. If you have dental treatments during the gap period, you will not have coverage or be reimbursed retroactively.

You should confirm that your coverage is active before seeking dental treatment or services. It's also important to note that after renewal, your co-payment level may change.

Do You Have Questions about CDCP Benefits?

As your trusted CDCP dentist in Newmarket, your team at the Smilehaus is here to help! We want our patients to be able to afford the dental care they need, so we will do everything we can to help you understand and maximize your CDCP benefits. We also offer third-party financing with Affirm if you're interested in affordable monthly payments for more extensive treatment plans.

If you need guidance or have questions about your treatment plan, dental insurance benefits, or payment options, talk with one of our knowledgeable team members at (365) 909-3999.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan for children covers kids under 18. As with adults, levels of coverage are based on the family's income.

For example, coverage is 100 percent for families who make under $70,000 per year. Between the income levels of $70,000 to $89,999, 40 to 60 percent is covered, so some families may incur out-of-pocket expenses for their dental treatment.

Understanding CDCP Coverage

Here are some of the CDCP benefits for children:

  • Preventive Care — Includes teeth cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants
  • Diagnostic Care — Includes dental exams and x-rays
  • Restorative Care — Includes stainless steel crowns and dental fillings for baby teeth
  • Endodontic Care — Includes pulpotomies, pulpectomies, and root canal treatment
  • Oral Surgery — Tooth extraction
  • Anesthesia — Includes general anesthesia if preauthorized

Some treatment procedures may require preauthorization. Orthodontic treatment is generally not covered under CDCP benefits, unless there is a medical need.

General Dentistry

We receive many questions from new patients about what to expect during their first appointment. These are the most common concerns we address:

Will I See the Dentist or Hygienist First?

Your first appointment at Smilehaus Newmarket typically lasts 60-90 minutes and includes a comprehensive exam, digital x-rays, and usually a professional cleaning.

You'll start with our hygienist, who will review your medical and dental history, take necessary x-rays, and often perform your cleaning. Then your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and bite.

What If You Find Problems?

If we discover issues like cavities or gum disease, we'll show you using our digital imaging technology and explain your treatment options clearly. We'll discuss the timeline, costs, and answer all your questions before recommending any treatment.

Will You Lecture Me About My Dental Habits?

Never. We're here to help, not judge. Whether you haven't visited a dentist in years or you're dealing with dental anxiety, we'll work with you to develop a plan that fits your needs and comfort level.

What Should I Bring to My First Appointment?

Bring your insurance card (if applicable), a list of any medications you take, and any questions or concerns you'd like to discuss. We'll handle the rest.

Call Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999 to schedule your first visit. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding Toronto communities.

Your Newmarket dentist, and most dentists, recommend twice-yearly dental checkups and professional teeth cleanings.

By visiting the dentist every six months, we can catch emerging oral health issues early and provide specific treatments to help lower your risks for the following complications or issues:

  • Tooth Decay
  • Tooth Infections
  • Gingivitis
  • Gum Disease
  • Bad Breath
  • Tooth Stains

Of course, your dentist may further customize this schedule based on your oral health profile.

Your Checkup and Teeth Cleaning in Newmarket

Dental checkups include a visual exam of the teeth, gums, and related tissues. We also take periodic x-rays if we suspect an issue or to monitor your oral health over time. Oral cancer screenings, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, TMJ therapy, and your professional teeth cleaning are also part of prevention.

Professional teeth cleanings mean you relax in the dental chair while we remove debris from your teeth; this debris can harbour cavity-causing bacteria that can lead to oral health issues in the future. Your teeth cleaning rids your smile of tartar, plaque, and general bacteria—everything your toothbrush and floss leave behind.

Is It Time for Your Next Dental Checkup and Teeth Cleaning?

If you have questions or are ready to schedule your next appointment with the dentist, call us today at (365) 909-3999.

We recommend visiting us twice a year for dental checkups and teeth cleanings because these visits help reduce your risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, gum disease, bad breath, and tooth infections. Of course, we always customize your treatment plan should issues arise.

Also, if you’re an anxious patient or phobic about the dental setting, we understand and want to help you feel at ease. Besides providing treatment in a relaxing, nurturing environment, we can also discuss sedation dentistry in Newmarket.

CEREC® Crowns and Bridges

Most dental insurance plans cover CEREC crowns the same way they cover traditional lab-made crowns, typically paying 50% of the cost after you've met your annual deductible. However, coverage details vary significantly between insurance plans, so it's important to understand your specific benefits.

How Insurance Views CEREC Crowns

Insurance companies generally don't distinguish between same-day CEREC crowns and traditional crowns that require multiple appointments. Both are considered major restorative procedures and receive the same level of coverage.

The key factor is whether the crown is medically necessary to restore a damaged or decayed tooth; cosmetic crowns for purely aesthetic reasons may not be covered.

Understanding Your Coverage

Your specific coverage depends on several factors

  • Your plan's annual maximum benefit
  • Whether you've met your deductible
  • What percentage your plan covers for major procedures
  • Whether our practice is in-network with your insurance provider

This may sound confusing, but we're here to help. Our knowledgeable team at Smilehaus Newmarket will verify your insurance benefits before treatment and provide a detailed cost estimate. We'll explain what your insurance will cover and what your approximate out-of-pocket costs will be; however, it's always a good idea to check with your insurer directly.

We also offer flexible payment options, including third-party and in-house financing.

Call us at (365) 909 3999 to discuss your insurance coverage and payment options. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding communities.

Yes! A dental bridge might be a good choice if dental implants are not an option. A bridge uses two dental crowns to support one or multiple prosthetic teeth in between. The bridge is made of ceramic porcelain, so it blends flawlessly with your smile. It also doesn't require a surgical procedure for placement, unlike dental implants.

Dentures are also a replacement option for multiple missing teeth, even if it's an entire upper or lower arch. A complete denture restores a full arch of missing teeth, while a partial denture replaces multiple missing teeth, allowing you to retain your remaining healthy teeth.

Treatment Tailored to Your Individual Needs

At Smilehaus Newmarket, our dentists create personalized treatment plans based on your needs. If you are learning about tooth replacement, they'll discuss the pros and cons of bridges, dentures, and dental implants so you can choose the best option for your needs, smile goals, lifestyle, and budget.

Replacing missing teeth is important for protecting your dental health and maintaining your smile. Our dentists can guide you through the process of replacing your teeth from start to finish at our Newmarket dental clinic.

Contact us at (365) 909 3999 to schedule an evaluation with one of our dentists.

With excellent home care and routine dental checkups, dental crowns can potentially last for 10 to 15 years. Today's crowns are durable and aesthetic, restoring beauty and function to your smile.

Caring for Your Dental Crown at Home

There are some steps you can take to protect the longevity of your crown.

  • Consistent Brushing and Flossing — Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes will help protect your crown. It cannot decay, but the remaining tooth structure underneath it can. Flossing is essential for removing plaque between teeth.
  • Don't Use Your Teeth as Tools — Never use your natural teeth or crowned teeth to open or carry things.
  • Avoid Sticky or Hard Foods — Biting directly into hard foods could crack or damage your crown, while sticky foods can pull it off your tooth.
  • Wear Protective Night Guards — If you clench or grind (bruxism) your teeth at night, be sure to wear a night guard to protect your teeth and crowns from the damage bruxism can cause.

Dental Implants

Dental implant surgery should not hurt during the procedure. We thoroughly numb the treatment area with local anesthetic before beginning, so you'll feel pressure and sensations of movement, but not pain. Most patients are surprised by how much more comfortable the procedure is compared to what they expected.

Comfort During Implant Surgery

Under local anesthetic, the surgical site is completely numb. You'll be aware of what's happening due to pressure, vibrations, and the sensation of the dentist working, but these sensations shouldn't be painful.

For anxious patients or more complex cases involving multiple implants, we also offer IV sedation. With IV sedation, you'll be deeply relaxed or lightly sleeping throughout the procedure with little to no memory of it afterward.

What's Implant Surgery Recovery Like?

Once the anesthetic wears off (typically 2 to 4 hours after your appointment), you'll likely experience some soreness and swelling around the implant site. Most patients describe this discomfort as less painful than a tooth extraction and easily manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen.

Managing Your Comfort

If you're particularly anxious about pain, let us know during your consultation. We can discuss sedation options and create a pain management plan that keeps you comfortable throughout the entire process.

Contact Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999 to discuss your concerns about dental implant surgery. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding communities.

Age is not generally a factor when considering dental implants. A patient who is 70 or 80 years old, in good general health, and has sufficient healthy bone structure can successfully receive an implant.

During your initial evaluation, our dentists will use x-rays and 3-D imaging to assess your bone health and structure and determine whether you are a candidate for a dental implant. If you lack healthy bone structure, they may suggest a bone grafting procedure to rebuild it so it can support an implant.

They may also recommend dental procedures, such as a professional dental cleaning or fillings, to ensure your oral health is in good condition before implant placement.

What Are the Advantages of Choosing Dental Implants in Newmarket?

Dental implants offer several advantages our patients appreciate:

  • Excellent longevity with the potential to last a lifetime
  • Natural look and feel
  • Restored and reliable function
  • Preserves bite alignment for optimal chewing function
  • Protects bone health by replacing the tooth's root
  • Beautiful aesthetics of a restored smile
  • A wise long-term investment due to its excellent longevity

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

No, there's no upper age limit for Invisalign treatment. Whether you're 25, 45, 65, or older, Invisalign can effectively straighten your teeth, provided your teeth and gums are healthy. In fact, more adults than ever are choosing orthodontic treatment to address alignment issues they've lived with for years or teeth that have shifted over time.

With Invisalign, Age Is Just a Number

Invisalign works by applying gentle, controlled pressure to move teeth gradually into proper alignment. This biological process works at any age, though treatment may take slightly longer for older adults because mature bone is denser and teeth move more slowly.

The critical factors aren't your age; they're the health of your teeth, gums, and bone structure.

Ideal for Adult Lifestyles

Many older adults prefer Invisalign precisely because it fits seamlessly into their established lifestyle. The clear aligners are virtually invisible during business meetings, social gatherings, and video calls.

You can remove them for important occasions, and there are no dietary restrictions, unlike traditional braces. For professionals, parents, and retirees seeking to enhance their smile without the appearance of metal braces, Invisalign is often the ideal solution.

Health Considerations with Invisalign

The main requirement is healthy gums and adequate bone support. If you have active gum disease or significant bone loss, we'll need to address those issues first before beginning orthodontic treatment.

As a Diamond Invisalign Provider, Smilehaus Newmarket has extensive experience treating adult patients of all ages. Call us at (365) 909 3999 to schedule your consultation. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding Ontario communities.

The answer to this question varies with each patient's individual needs. However, the good news is that most patients can finish treatment with clear aligners in about 10 to 18 months.

The best way to determine how long your Invisalign treatment might take is to book an evaluation with one of our dentists at Smilehaus Newmarket. Our dentists use x-rays, photos, 3-D imaging, and a thorough exam to evaluate your case.

They can determine if Invisalign is right for your needs and even show you what your straightened smile might look like after treatment. You'll leave your evaluation with an understanding of your treatment options, your out-of-pocket expense, and the timeline to complete your smile. This allows you to make an informed decision about the best treatment for your needs.

If it's determined that Invisalign® isn't the best option for you, our dentists will discuss alternative treatments that will help you achieve your smile goals.

Traditional Braces

Phase 1 orthodontic treatment addresses specific bite or alignment issues in younger children (typically ages 7 to 10) while they still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The goal isn't to straighten all the teeth; it's to correct problems that are easier to fix during this developmental stage.

Why Start So Early?

Children's jaws are still growing at this age, allowing us to guide that growth in a healthier direction. Early intervention can often reduce the need for more extensive treatment later, including tooth extractions or jaw surgery.

What Issues Does Phase 1 Treat?

Dr. Shin may recommend Phase 1 treatment for:

  • Severe crowding requiring palate expansion
  • Crossbites affecting jaw development
  • Significant overbites or underbites
  • Protruding front teeth at risk of injury
  • Harmful habits like thumb-sucking that affect tooth position

What Happens After Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase 1 typically lasts between 9 and 18 months. Afterward, we monitor your child's development while remaining permanent teeth erupt naturally. Most children will still need Phase 2 treatment (comprehensive braces or Invisalign) later, but this second phase is often shorter and simpler.'

Can Your Child Benefit from Phase 1 Treatment?

Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment. During your child's evaluation, Dr. Shin will provide honest guidance about whether early intervention would benefit your child or if waiting is the better approach.

Full Smile Makeovers

A full smile makeover addresses multiple dental issues that have accumulated over time and are affecting your oral health, function, or appearance. This comprehensive approach is ideal when dealing with multiple problems simultaneously—whether from deferred dental care, extensive tooth damage, significant tooth loss, or a combination of these concerns.

Common Dental Issues We Address

Complete smile makeovers typically treat:

  • Multiple missing teeth affecting chewing and facial structure
  • Severely worn or damaged teeth from grinding or decay
  • Failing dental work needing replacement
  • Advanced gum disease affecting tooth stability
  • Misaligned bite causing pain or dysfunction
  • Visible cosmetic concerns like discoloration or gaps
  • Chronic dental pain from multiple sources

Who Benefits from a Full Smile Makeover?

You might be a good candidate if you're avoiding foods because chewing is difficult, feeling self-conscious about your smile, dealing with multiple dental problems needing coordinated treatment, or facing failing dental work that requires comprehensive replacement.

Your Personalized Smile Treatment Plan

During your evaluation at Smilehaus Newmarket, we'll examine every aspect of your oral health and discuss which issues matter most to you. We'll develop a strategic treatment plan that addresses problems in the most effective sequence, often phasing treatments over several months to fit your budget and schedule.

Sedation Dentistry

Yes, sedation dentistry is safe when administered by trained professionals following proper protocols. At Smilehaus Newmarket, patient safety is our top priority, and we take extensive precautions to ensure every sedation experience is both comfortable and secure.

Our Sedation Safety Protocols

Before recommending sedation, we thoroughly review your complete medical history, current medications, and health conditions that might affect sedation safety. This careful screening helps us determine which sedation option is safest and most appropriate for your specific situation.

Sedation Training and Credentials

Our dentists who provide sedation have received extensive specialized training in sedation techniques, patient monitoring, and emergency management. Dr. Joo is specifically trained and licensed to administer IV sedation safely in our office.

Sedation Levels and Safety Considerations

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the mildest form of sedation with an excellent safety record. The effects wear off within minutes, and you can drive yourself home.

IV sedation requires more careful monitoring and someone to drive you home, but remains very safe under proper supervision.

Serious complications from dental sedation are extremely rare, especially when proper screening, monitoring, and trained professionals are involved.

We Welcome Your Questions

If you have specific health concerns or questions, we encourage you to discuss them with our team during your consultation. We'll explain exactly how we'll keep you safe and comfortable throughout your procedure.

Call Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999 to discuss sedation options for your dental treatment. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding communities.

You can drive after dental sedation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas). If you have IV sedation, it is not safe for you to drive afterward, and you will need to arrange transportation.

Understanding Dental Sedation in Newmarket, ON

At Smilehaus Newmarket, we offer two types of sedation at our clinic:

  • Nitrous Oxide — Laughing gas is delivered through an inhalation mask worn throughout your procedure. It is safe for adults and children to use nitrous oxide during their dental procedures. Helps "take the edge off" for people who experience dental fear or anxiety.
  • IV Sedation — Delivered intravenously. Dr. Joo is licensed to provide IV sedation and monitors your vital signs and heart rate throughout the procedure. He can adjust the medication as needed. Patients typically feel as if they are asleep, yet remain responsive during their treatment.

Would Sedation Dentistry Benefit You?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients with these needs:

  • They suffer from dental fear, anxiety, or phobia
  • They have an extensive treatment plan they want to complete during one visit
  • They have a bad gag reflex
  • They can't sit for prolonged periods
  • They have emotional, physical, or mental special needs

Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction should not hurt during the procedure. Before we begin, we thoroughly numb the treatment area with local anesthetic, so you'll feel pressure and movement but no pain.

Managing Pain During Tooth Extraction

At Smilehaus Newmarket, we understand that dental anxiety is real, and fear of pain often prevents patients from getting necessary care. That's why we offer multiple comfort options beyond standard numbing:

  • Local anesthetic — Complete numbness in the treatment area, so you feel no pain
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — Mild sedation that helps you relax while remaining fully conscious
  • IV sedation — Dr. Joo provides deeper sedation right here in our office, allowing you to drift into a deeply relaxed state with little to no memory of the procedure

IV sedation is especially helpful for complex extractions like impacted wisdom teeth or for patients with significant dental anxiety.

What to Expect After Your Extraction

After the anesthetic wears off, usually within a few hours, you may experience mild discomfort. Most patients manage this easily with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and pain management guidance tailored to your specific procedure.

If you're concerned about pain during tooth extraction, please discuss your anxiety with us during your consultation. We're experienced in helping nervous patients feel comfortable and safe.

Call Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999 to schedule your consultation. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding Ontario communities.

Periodontal Treatment

The answer depends on which stage of gum disease you're dealing with. Gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, is completely reversible with prompt treatment and improved oral hygiene. However, once gum disease progresses to periodontitis, the damage to bone and tissue cannot be reversed, though it can be managed and controlled.

Reversing Gingivitis

Gingivitis causes red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. At this stage, no permanent damage has occurred. A thorough professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup, combined with consistent brushing and flossing at home, can eliminate the infection and restore your gums to health within weeks.

Managing Periodontitis

Once gum disease advances to periodontitis, bacteria have damaged the bone and connective tissue supporting your teeth. While we can't regenerate this lost tissue, we can stop the disease from progressing further through:

  • Deep cleanings (scaling and root planing)
  • More frequent maintenance appointments
  • Conscientious brushing and flossing

With proper treatment and ongoing maintenance, you can keep periodontitis under control and prevent tooth loss.

The key is catching gum disease as early as possible. If you notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or gum recession, don't wait—these are warning signs that early intervention can address before permanent damage occurs.

Schedule Your Dental Cleaning with Us

Contact Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999 to schedule an evaluation. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and all surrounding Ontario communities.

Gum disease is common, but the good news is that it can often be managed or even reversed when caught early. At Smilehaus Newmarket, we focus on personalized care to help patients maintain healthy gums and prevent further issues.

Early-Stage Treatment: Gingivitis

If gum disease is caught in its early stage, known as gingivitis, treatment is usually straightforward. Your dentist may recommend professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup, combined with improved at-home oral hygiene habits, including brushing, flossing, and possibly an antimicrobial mouthwash. With consistent care, gums can return to a healthy state.

Advanced Treatment: Periodontitis

For more advanced gum disease (periodontitis), deeper cleaning may be required. This can include scaling and root planing to remove bacteria and smooth the tooth roots. In some cases, additional therapies like localized antibiotics or laser treatments are used to help reduce infection and support gum reattachment.

Ongoing Maintenance

Once gum disease is treated, maintaining gum health is key. Regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and diligent at-home care help prevent recurrence.

BOTOX® for TMJ Pain

BOTOX results typically last 3–4 months, whether you're receiving treatment for TMJ pain relief or facial aesthetics. However, duration varies based on your metabolism, the areas treated, dosage used, and whether this is your first treatment or a repeat visit.

BOTOX for TMJ Pain Relief

When treating TMJ disorder in Newmarket, BOTOX relaxes overactive jaw muscles responsible for clenching and grinding. Most patients notice relief from jaw pain, tension headaches, and facial soreness within 3–7 days, with full effects apparent within two weeks. This relief typically lasts 3–4 months before muscle activity gradually returns.

Many TMJ patients find that with repeated treatments, they can extend the time between appointments as muscles become trained to relax.

BOTOX for Facial Aesthetics

For lines like crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles, you can expect to see smoothing effects within 3–7 days, with optimal results at two weeks. Treated muscles gradually regain activity over 3–4 months, and lines slowly reappear.

With regular treatments, results often last longer because repeated muscle relaxation prevents lines from deepening. Some patients extend their intervals to 4–6 months after several sessions.

Maintaining BOTOX Results

To maintain consistent results, whether for TMJ relief or aesthetics, most patients schedule follow-up appointments every 3–4 months. We'll work with you to find the optimal schedule based on the duration of your individual results.

Ready to learn more? Contact Smilehaus Newmarket at (365) 909 3999 to discuss Botox treatment for TMJ pain relief or facial aesthetics. We serve patients throughout Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Aurora, and surrounding communities.
