Does tooth extraction hurt?

Tooth extraction should not hurt during the procedure. Before we begin, we thoroughly numb the treatment area with local anesthetic, so you'll feel pressure and movement but no pain.

Managing Pain During Tooth Extraction

At Smilehaus Newmarket, we understand that dental anxiety is real, and fear of pain often prevents patients from getting necessary care. That's why we offer multiple comfort options beyond standard numbing:

  • Local anesthetic — Complete numbness in the treatment area, so you feel no pain
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — Mild sedation that helps you relax while remaining fully conscious
  • IV sedation — Dr. Joo provides deeper sedation right here in our office, allowing you to drift into a deeply relaxed state with little to no memory of the procedure

IV sedation is especially helpful for complex extractions like impacted wisdom teeth or for patients with significant dental anxiety.

What to Expect After Your Extraction

After the anesthetic wears off, usually within a few hours, you may experience mild discomfort. Most patients manage this easily with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and pain management guidance tailored to your specific procedure.

If you're concerned about pain during tooth extraction, please discuss your anxiety with us during your consultation. We're experienced in helping nervous patients feel comfortable and safe.
