The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is now available to even more Canadians! If you previously didn't qualify because of your age, that's changed. Now, eligible Canadians can apply for CDCP coverage as the federal government expands the program by removing age restrictions and opening applications to all qualifying residents based on eligibility requirements.

Here's what you need to know.

CDCP Is Now Open to More Canadians

According to federal data, over 6.5 million Canadians are currently enrolled in the CDCP, and more than 4 million have already visited a dental health care provider through the program.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan was introduced to help make dental care more affordable for people who don't have private dental insurance. Initially, the program rolled out in phases, focusing on seniors, children under 18, and eligible adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate.

Now, the age restrictions have been removed, which makes the program available to eligible adults of all ages. If you meet the income and insurance requirements, you may now qualify for coverage.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the CDCP, you generally must:

  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • Have filed your most recent tax return
  • Not have access to private dental insurance
  • Meet the program's adjusted family net income requirements

Coverage levels vary depending on your household income, and some treatments may still require a co-payment or preauthorization. You can learn more here

What Dental Services Are Covered?

The CDCP helps cover many preventive and restorative dental services, including:

  • Dental exams
  • Professional cleanings
  • X-rays
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Extractions
  • Dentures and other eligible services

Not every procedure is fully covered, and some treatments require approval before they can be completed. Your dental team can help explain what your coverage includes before treatment begins.
